The exhibition aims to present to the public a selection of volumes that once belonged to Giovanni Marsili, botanist, doctor, traveller and scientist, bibliophile and poet, scholar of classics and antiquarian disciplines. His collection, the founding nucleus of the Botanical Garden Library, was divided in the 1920s, when it was decided to transfer to other institutes of the University and the Biblioteca Universitaria di Padova the works of the Botanical Garden Library no longer considered relevant to botany.
This exhibition offers the general public the opportunity to get to know and admire the personal library of an 18th century scholar, professor at the Studium Patavinum. Once again, on the occasion of the exhibition, the books on display recount the many interests of their original owner: the naturalistic passion in the display cases dedicated to botany and zoology; the medical training received at the University of Padova with the books dedicated to medicine; the solid classical preparation guaranteed by the studies of Latin and Greek; the curiosity for the contemporary in the publications of the Enlightenment; the interest in travel through the prints on exotic plants and distant countries.
